Here is today's cannabis news in 60 seconds. Election night went the industry's way, and a rival bidder jumped into Canada's biggest cannabis takeover fight.

Massachusetts

Voters soundly defeated Question 8, so adult-use sales stay legal. MJBizDaily called it a historic night that protects a $1.65B industry, and it was the most expensive ballot question of the midterms. Axios reports the repeal fight united the state's cannabis businesses.

More ballots

Idaho voters rejected HJR 4, which would have limited their own power to legalize by initiative. Houston approved Proposition A, making misdemeanor marijuana enforcement the city's lowest priority.

Statehouses and Congress

Democrats took the Pennsylvania State Senate, which Marijuana Moment says tees up legalization. Wisconsin Democrats won full control of state government for the first time in 16 years. Iowa's incoming governor wants to legalize to help fix the budget. In Texas, newly elected Sen. James Talarico says he plans to work with President Trump on federal legalization. NORML says the new Congress improves prospects for federal reform.

Deals

Organigram agreed to buy Aurora for about C$561M (US$400M), or C$7.80 a share, a 21% premium to Curaleaf's hostile offer. BAT is investing US$133.1M in Organigram to back the deal. Aurora shares jumped about 22%.

DEA registrations

Planet 13 received registrations for all 34 of its Florida dispensaries, and Jushi received registrations for its medical operations.

Research

A Washington University study found cannabis is involved in most substance-related emergency visits among teens and young adults.

The takeaway: voters protected legal markets in three places on one night, while consolidation keeps reshaping the companies that serve them.

Which result matters more for the next 12 months: Massachusetts holding, or Pennsylvania's new path to legalization?
